Finding a long-term flat in Lisbon as a foreigner β€” any tips? I've been using Idealista but landlords seem wary of non-Portuguese.06:56 AM

Idealista and OLX are the main portals. But honestly many good flats are rented through word-of-mouth or Facebook groups like 'Lisbon Expats & Housing'.07:21 AM

Also worth knowing: rents have risen A LOT in the past 2 years. Budget €900-1200 for a decent 1BR in Principe Real or Mouraria. Cheaper in Almada across the river.06:56 AM

Almada is great actually. 10 min by ferry to Cais do SodrΓ©. Much cheaper and a lovely neighbourhood feel. I'm there!07:26 AM

For newcomers: landlords here still often prefer cash payments and may not give you a proper contract. Push for a legal tenancy β€” it protects you under Portuguese law.06:56 AM

Super important point Erik. Also if you have an NIF (Portuguese tax number), show it to landlords β€” it makes them more comfortable renting to foreigners.07:16 AM

How do I get an NIF as a non-EU person? Is it complicated?06:56 AM

You need a fiscal representative (any Portuguese citizen or company). Some law firms offer this for €50-100. Once you have the NIF you can open a bank account and sign contracts.07:16 AM

Found my flat! Alfama, 70m2, €1,100/month. Historic building with azulejo tiles and a river view. Pinching myself 😍06:56 AM

Alfama!! Lucky! That's a dream location. Noisy on fado nights but magical. Congrats πŸŽ‰πŸŽŠ07:11 AM
