How to Find an English-Speaking Doctor in Germany

Navigating the German healthcare system as an expat can be overwhelming. Here's how to find doctors who speak English in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and beyond.

Healthcare in Germany: An Expat's Challenge

Germany has world-class healthcare — but finding a doctor who speaks English can be surprisingly difficult, especially outside major cities. Most German doctors completed their training in German, and while many speak some English, medical consultations require precise communication.

Where to Search

Online Directories

  • Jameda.de — Germany's largest doctor review platform. Filter by language spoken.
  • Doctolib.de — Book appointments online. Some profiles list languages.
  • Trixtu Services — Our health services directory lists English-speaking doctors recommended by expats.

Hospital International Departments

Major hospitals in Berlin (Charité), Munich (Klinikum), and Hamburg (UKE) have international patient departments staffed with English-speaking doctors.

By City

Berlin

Berlin has the most English-friendly healthcare scene. Areas like Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, and Charlottenburg have numerous English-speaking practices.

Munich

Munich's international community means many doctors in Schwabing, Maxvorstadt, and the city center speak English.

Hamburg

Check the Eppendorf area near UKE hospital. Many private practices cater to international patients.

Types of Insurance

Your insurance type affects which doctors you can see:

  • Public (GKV) — TK, AOK, Barmer. Most doctors accept public insurance.
  • Private (PKV) — More choice, shorter wait times, but higher premiums.

Emergency Situations

In emergencies, call 112. Emergency room staff at major hospitals typically speak English. For non-emergencies, call 116 117 (medical on-call service).

Tips

  • Book your first appointment as a "new patient" (Neupatient) — bring your insurance card
  • Arrive 15 minutes early to fill out forms (usually in German — use Google Translate)
  • Ask the receptionist upfront: "Spricht der Arzt Englisch?"
